DT Cox Elementary School is proud to recognize Mallie Maffett, Greta Huffstatler, and Scout Olsen as Warriors of Distinction. These students have shown exemplary character and have been role models for other students.

Stock Market Games, 2016
The 6th Grade UFO students at Pontotoc Middle School competed in the 2016 Spring Stock Market Games.  The program enables teams of students to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in the stock market over a 15 week period.  Winners are determined on the percentage return above or below S&P 500 growth.  The first place Pontotoc Middle School team out performed the S&P by 21.3% and grew their portfolio to $132,504.  The second place team outperformed the S&P by 13.8% and grew their portfolio to $125,037.  The teams were honored at the Mississippi Council on Economic Education's Annual Awards Ceremony on May 10th at Mississippi College in Clinton, MS.

Recognitions, 2016
The Pontotoc City School District recognized several individuals for their service and contributions at the February board meeting.  The School Board was recognized as a part of School Board Member Recognition Week, Feb. 14-20, 2016.  Two teachers, with their families, were recognized for attaining National Board Certification.  The PCSD has 40 National Board Certified teachers!!  We recognized our Teachers of the Year from each building.  The District Teacher of the Year was also recognized.

At the February School Board meeting, Gary Golden was sworn in for another term.  The oath was administered by Circuit Clerk Melinda Nowicki and he was joined by his family.

Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Dorothy Thomas, math teacher at Pontotoc High School, as Pontotoc City School District Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Thomas has taught in the Pontotoc City School District since 2008 and has 20 years experience in education. She is a National Board Certified teacher and recently earned a Presidential Award of Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Mrs. Thomas believes “outstanding teachers hold high expectations for their students, use assessment data to improve their teaching, and treat their students with respect.” We join her family Tracy, DeAshyland, and Rhandi in wishing her success in the state competition.

Jazz Band, 2015
The Pontotoc High School Jazz Band performed for the Pontotoc Rotary Club's Christmas Program on Tuesday, December 15th.  It was an amazing performance and definitely enjoyed by all!

Dorothy Thomas has been named a finalist for the
Presidential Awards for Excellence in
Mathematics and Science Teaching
Congratulations to Dorothy Thomas!  Ms. Thomas, a PHS Algebra teacher, was recently honored by the Mississippi Board of Education and the Pontotoc City School District Board as one of the finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) Program. The program, established in 1983 by the White House, allows each state to select up to five state finalists in mathematics and up to five state finalists in science. One of the state finalists in each content area will be selected as the Presidential Awardee for the state, which is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States.

Annual Title I Meeting
The annual Title I public meeting for the Pontotoc City School District will be held at Pontotoc Elementary School, on Monday, November 16, 2015, and at DT Cox Elementary School on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at 5:30 PM.  Everyone is invited to attend.   
Honor Choir
MMEA All-State Elementary Honor Choir Participants
Three students from Pontotoc Middle School auditioned for the MMEA All-State Elementary Honor Choir and were chosen to be participants.  This choir works in conjunction with the Mississippi Music Educators Association.  The choir will perform during the MMEA State Conference in the spring.  All three are fifth graders at Pontotoc Middle School and were sponsored by Mrs. Leslie Mitchell, music teacher at D.T. Cox Elementary School.   Over 400 children auditioned and 175 were selected.  These are the first students in the history of the choir to represent Pontotoc City Schools.

At the end of October, the first graders at Pontotoc Elementary School visited the new garden at Pontotoc Middle School.  First graders visited stations run by middle school students.  They explained the gardening process, had the opportunity to taste vegetables, exercised, and learned about living a healthy lifestyle.
